Alita Dupray
Sorrow is never complete without a smile just as true joy inevitably requires a gentle tear. Alita Dupray is a master of this very human duality. Deemed the “dynamo of jazz” by the late Linton Garner, she is a beautiful young chanteuse possessed of an uncanny ability to bring another time, spirit, mood, and place and conjure them present. Full of evocation, Alita pours bluesy woe and purring delight, taking words that give themselves with aching uniqueness to a feel that is so obviously her own.
After years of unpredictable, unannounced guerrilla performances, Ms Dupray has honed her craft to a fine edge, cutting to the truth with spirited renditions of songs from times and styles neglected by mainstream jazz and blues. She is a fearless and engaging performer, always of the moment. City TV calls Alita Dupray “Irresistible”, the Globe and Mail hails Alita Dupray as “Sexy and formidable.” She updates the jazz repertoire by performing arrangements of popular songs from the 20’s to the present, incorporating all styles under the umbrella of improvisation.
A veteran of the recording studio, Alita has sung for commercials, TV, and movie soundtracks. She has also been featured on CBC’s Hot Air. Despite not having a recording ready for release, Alita has made a living as a musician her whole adult life. She is in demand as a freelance performer in almost every style.
Some past unannounced appearances include touring with Juno Award Winner Leela Gilday and an impromptu late night jam session at O’Doul’s with the Reverend Al Green’s band. Alita has also appeared in productions with Jim Byrnes, Dee Daniels, Michael Buble and Diana Krall, among others. She has performed with the likes of Linton Garner, T. Nile, and Bruno Hubert.
